This book is the sequel to A Curse So Dark and Lonely, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and continues to story of Emberfall and our beloved characters Wren, Grey & Harper.

Hi Readers!

Because this is a sequel I’m going to try and aviod talking about the specific plot, but if you want to know more about the first in this series then you can find my review of the first book here – ‘A Curse So Dark and Lonely’

As a sequel, everything I loved about the first book isn’t really in this one. For a sequel it’s strangely unconnected to the first book although it did expand on the political and world elements of it.

The plot is, honestly, probably what I liked least about it. This is really only because it didn’t go how I wanted it to go. The amount of conflict and secrets had me just shouting at the book the entire time ‘WHY CAN’T YOU ALL JUST GET ALONG?’ Some of the characters decisions lacked sense and were just so frustrating to read.

If the plot is what I least like about this sequel, then the characters are what kept me reading. I just love them so much. A Heart So Fierce and Broken changes the perspective from Harper and Wren to Grey and a new character called ‘Lia Mara’ and I immediately fell in love with both. Kemmerer is great at building relationships and characters you really come to care about.

However, I did miss the lack of Harper and Wren and was waiting the whole time for more of them which never happened. Finishing it, I do think the book would have benefitted from having their perspective as well. They became such passive characters which was weird seeing as they’re the main characters of book one.

She knows how to write a fantasy. Elegantly written and so fun to read. The plot is well paced and I never felt bored. I read this book in two days. The characters are well fleshed out and you quickly got a sense of who they are. You get so drawn in that it brings out your emotions and you’ll find yourself getting really involved in whats occuring, the good and the bad.

Would I Read Again? Yes.
Would I Reccommend: If you’re in the market for a YA Fantasy with great characters, absolutely.

Thanks for reading,

Jess X
